Regulatory Monitoring FCCThe FCC authorized SMS/800, Inc. to open the 844 toll free code at noon (Eastern Time) on December 7, 2013. At that time, Responsible Organizations (RespOrgs) may reserve 844 toll free numbers. The FCC has not yet adopted an allocation method for the 844 code.

SMS/800, Inc. originally recommended that the code be opened on February 15, 2014. In June of this year it revised its recommendation because demand for toll free numbers reservations accelerated the exhaust of available numbers in the 800, 888, 877, 866, and 855 codes.  The FCC said that if subsequent projections indicate that toll free number exhaust is more imminent, it may institute emergency procedures to avoid depletion of the current pool of available numbers before the new 844 code is opened.
