Lifeline awareness week starts sept. 9

This year, September 9th through the 15th is National Telephone Discount Lifeline Awareness Week. A week to help raise awareness about Lifeline Across America.

Lifeline, a government program that has been around in one form or another since 1985, provides monthly telephone service discounts for eligible low-income consumers in all 50 states, U.S. territories and Commonwealths.  Lifeline helps low-income consumers stay connected to friends and family, contact schools, find jobs, access health care and call for help in emergencies.

Funding for Lifeline is through the federal Universal Service Program where contributions are made from wireline, wireless and some VoIP providers based on the company’s revenues.  In addition to their USF contributions, Carrier Lifeline obligations can vary by state and may involve additional service and/or reporting obligations.
